The short answer
- You want automatic ball-following and match analysis: stay with a dedicated AI camera: Veo, Pixellot Air NXT or Hudl Focus Flex. All of them come with a subscription.
- You want auto-follow without a subscription: XbotGo. The Chameleon turns your own phone into a tracking camera, the Falcon is a standalone camera.
- You mainly want the goals, looking like TV, without new hardware: an iPhone on a tripod plus MatchReel. You tag goals live on your Apple Watch or iPhone and get clips and a highlight reel with score bar, scorers, intro and final score.
- You want quick clips for free: Tonsser Cam keeps the last 10, 30 or 60 seconds when you tap.

What Veo costs
Veo Cam 3 is a panoramic camera on a tall tripod. After the match it uploads the recording and creates a follow-cam view with AI. It is well made and widely used by clubs. Here is what it costs:
- Camera: £1,199 (€1,299), the 5G version £1,399 (€1,599), refurbished from £549. Veo regularly offers the camera free with an annual package.
- Subscription required: Veo's help centre says plainly that the camera cannot be used, and recordings cannot be watched, without an active subscription. Each camera needs its own plan.
- Plans: Starter £69/month or £499/year (10 recording hours a month, recordings kept for 6 months), Team £110/month or £799/year (20 hours, 12 months), Club £149/month or £999/year.
- Add-ons: livestreaming (Veo Live) and analytics (Veo Analytics 2) cost extra.
That is why "Veo alternative without subscription" is such a common search. For a club with several teams that analyses every match, Veo can still be worth it. For a Sunday league side that mainly wants the goals, it may be more than they need.
The alternatives in detail
Veo Go: Veo with your own iPhones
Veo's own lower-cost option uses iPhones instead of the Veo camera: one controller phone plus one or two camera phones (iPhone 11 or newer). The footage uploads over Wi-Fi and Veo's AI stitches it and adds the follow-cam. It costs £29/month or £249/year, and the rig and tripod are free with a yearly plan. Livestreaming and Veo Analytics are not available with Veo Go. Good if you like Veo's software but want to avoid the hardware cost; it is still a yearly subscription.
XbotGo Chameleon and Falcon: auto-follow without a subscription
The Chameleon is a motorised mount for your own phone: the XbotGo app tracks the ball and pans and zooms to follow play. It costs from $299.99. The Falcon, launched in 2026, is a standalone 4K camera that does not need a phone, from $769. Recording, tracking, livestreaming and auto-highlights work without a subscription; AI match analysis is an optional paid extra per match. Keep in mind that the Chameleon ties up your phone for the whole match.
Pixellot Air NXT: club-grade, smaller budget than Veo
A portable dual-lens camera that sits at the halfway line and produces the match automatically, with a battery for around six hours. The camera costs £799 (€999). Plans start at £59/month or £599/year for Team Lite (one team, four events a month, 30 days of storage); the Team plan with unlimited hours is £89/month.
Hudl Focus Flex: for clubs already on Hudl
A portable AI camera that pans and zooms on the camera itself and uploads to Hudl. Hudl does not publish a price for Focus Flex; it is sold as a yearly package, and Hudl's UK pages say semi-pro and amateur packages start from $2,000. Makes most sense if your club already uses Hudl for analysis.
Trace: US youth soccer only
Trace leases a camera to the team and families pay a subscription (from $180 a year) for AI clips of their own child. It is aimed at US youth soccer; we found no UK availability.
MatchReel: your iPhone, the goals in TV style
MatchReel takes a different route. There is no special camera: you film with your iPhone on a tripod, and during the match you tag every goal on your Apple Watch or iPhone, with the scorer if you like. After the final whistle MatchReel finds those moments in your recording and cuts clips and a highlight reel with a live score bar, scorer graphics, an intro with date and weather, and the final score. Several iPhones are synced automatically, and portrait clips for social media are built in.
- Price: free to download. Single clips in 1080p are free (with a small watermark). MatchReel Pro unlocks the complete reel, 4K, portrait clips and all designs: £3.99 a month or £34.99 a year in the UK ($3.99 / $34.99 in the US, €4.99 / €39.99 in the EU), with a free trial.
- Privacy: no account, no cloud. Recordings and data stay on your iPhone.
- What it does not do: it does not follow the ball and has no tactical analysis or livestream. If you need that, pick one of the AI cameras above.

Tonsser Cam: free quick clips
A free iPhone app with an Apple Watch companion. You keep recording, and when something happens you tap to keep the last 10, 30 or 60 seconds, with an optional scoreboard overlay. It works offline without an account. It is not built for recording whole matches, and it has no auto-follow.
AI phone gimbals (for example Insta360 Flow 2 Pro)
Gimbals that track a subject with your iPhone cost well under £200 and need no subscription. They are made for following a single person at close range, though, not for covering a full pitch from the touchline.
Which one fits your team?
| You want | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Full matches with auto-follow, analysis, several teams | Veo, Pixellot or Hudl |
| Veo's software, lower hardware cost | Veo Go |
| Auto-follow, no subscription | XbotGo Chameleon or Falcon |
| The goals as a TV-style reel for the team chat, using phones you already own | MatchReel |
| Quick free clips of single moments | Tonsser Cam |
Frequently asked questions
Can you use a Veo camera without a subscription?
No. Veo's help centre states that an active subscription is required to use the camera, watch recordings and analyse matches. Each camera needs its own subscription.
Is there a Veo alternative without a subscription?
Yes. XbotGo sells its Chameleon phone mount and Falcon camera without a required subscription (AI match analysis is an optional paid extra). Phone apps such as MatchReel and Tonsser Cam also work without a camera subscription; MatchReel's free plan exports single clips, the full reel is part of MatchReel Pro.
What is the cheapest way to film grassroots football?
An iPhone on a tall tripod at the halfway line. It does not follow the ball, but it records the whole match, and an app like MatchReel turns the goals you tag during the match into clips and a highlight reel. See our guide on how to film a football match with an iPhone.
Does MatchReel follow the ball like Veo?
No. MatchReel uses your own iPhone recording from a fixed position. It finds the goals through the taps on your Apple Watch or iPhone and adds TV-style graphics. If you need automatic ball tracking or tactical analysis, a dedicated AI camera like Veo, Pixellot or Hudl is the better fit.
